Most "conference table size" articles are shape-of-the-week think pieces written by someone who's never sat through a real Q4 board meeting. This one isn't.
You're here because you're specifying — or approving the spec on — a piece of furniture that a room of executives is going to sit around for the next ten years. The wrong size doesn't just look wrong; it shortens meetings by making people uncomfortable, and it makes the AV budget harder because power runs stop working the way the architect drew them.
There are only three quieter questions worth answering first:
- How many people will actually sit at it on a normal Tuesday? — not the fire-code max, the working number.
- What's the free floor dimension of the room? — floor length and floor width minus every fixed obstruction (columns, credenza depth, door swings).
- Does the room need integrated power and data, or just a wall outlet nearby?
Answer those, and the rest of the guide narrows quickly.

Per-seat spacing: 30 inches is the minimum that "works," 36 inches is comfortable, and 42 inches is generous / boardroom. [^ofwgo] [^custom-conf] Use 30" only for auxiliary meeting rooms; use 36" for the room your CEO walks into.
Height: 28.5"–29" is standard for commercial conference tables. Herman Miller's Headway line specifies 28.5"; Versteel lists 29". Either lands within ergonomic norms for standard office chairs. [^herman-headway] [^versteel-paces]
Clearance behind chairs: 36 inches minimum between the table edge and the wall (or the next obstruction). That's what lets someone stand without asking two neighbors to shift. It's why the "minimum room" column above adds ~72" total (36" × 2) to the table length on the long axis.
1) The seat-count math, done properly
The number that determines your table length is not "how many people work here" — it's how many people sit at this table during a working meeting. A ten-person team that meets in pairs and trios most of the time doesn't need a 10-seat table; they need an 8-seat table with two extra chairs against the wall.
Once you've settled on the working seat count, the linear math is:
- 30 in per person — minimum, feels tight, chairs bump when someone shifts.
- 36 in per person — comfortable, the standard for boardrooms. [^custom-conf]
- 42 in per person — generous, correct for executive dining or investor-facing rooms.
End seats: allow 12 inches per end seat at the table's short axis. If the shape has flat ends (rectangle, boat, racetrack), you can seat one person per end; sometimes two on wider designs.
Example — 10 working seats, boardroom spacing:
- 4 seats down each side × 36" = 144" length needed, plus 12" end clearance on each end for aesthetics → round up to 144".
- Two people at the ends → 10 seats total.
That's why the standard 10-seat commercial spec lands at 120"–132" long × 48" wide. Steelcase's Convene brochure and Herman Miller's Headway line both anchor around these numbers. [^steelcase-convene] [^herman-headway]
2) Room clearance is what most first-time buyers get wrong
The biggest install-day surprise isn't the table — it's realizing the chairs can't be pushed out fully because the credenza is 20 inches deep and there's a projector cart on the opposite wall.
The rule to memorize:
Room length ≥ table length + 6 feet.
That 6 feet is 3 feet of chair-pull-out clearance on each end. A common office-furniture rule of thumb is that "the table should equal the usable room length minus 10 feet," which is essentially the same math with extra buffer for foot traffic. [^neat-rot]
If your room is a rectangle and your table is a rectangle, this is easy. If the room has a column, a supply cabinet, or an AV rack — subtract that depth from the usable floor and re-run the math. Half the "we ordered too big" phone calls are avoidable this way.
3) Shape: pick the one that matches the meeting, not the trend
There are only five shapes worth considering for a real conference table. They're not interchangeable.
- Rectangle — the maximum-seating shape. Also the most hierarchical: the "head of the table" is a real thing. Use for boards, formal meetings, and any room where the seating chart matters. [^madison-shapes]
- Racetrack — softened rectangle with rounded short-axis ends. Same capacity feel, easier flow around the ends, less visually formal. Very common in executive suites. [^custom-conf]
- Boat — belly-out in the middle, tapering toward the ends. Improves sight lines for presentation-heavy rooms; center seats can see the ends and the ends can see the screen. Slightly more depth needed for the same capacity. [^eureka-boat]
- Oval — feels most collaborative. Softer traffic flow, but the curving centerline is harder to mount power boxes cleanly. Herman Miller offers oval Y-base variants at 96–144" length × 48–60" width for this reason. [^herman-headway]
- Round — small teams (up to 8–10) where equality of position matters. Doesn't scale up efficiently; a 96" round seats fewer than a 96" rectangle. [^nucraft-ascari]
Which shape for what: if the room hosts board meetings with a presentation screen, boat or racetrack. If it's a working room where people bring laptops and screens rotate, rectangle. If it's a small executive team of 6–8 that discusses more than presents, round or oval.
4) Power, data, and AV — plan cutouts before the table is built
Nothing dates a conference table faster than surface-mounted power strips running down the middle held on with velcro. Integrated power/data is part of the spec, not an add-on.
Two conventions are worth knowing about:
- Power islands / grommets in the tabletop. Nucraft's Power Island and Steelcase's Convene use recessed flip-up units centered along the long axis. Herman Miller's Headway price book specifies technology cutout sizing by table width. [^nucraft-power] [^herman-priceguide] [^steelcase-convene-tech]
- Under-tabletop cable trays with wall runs. Cheaper, uglier if the table doesn't have a modesty panel or drop, but the right choice when the AV package is minimal.
For a custom epoxy river table, the cutout has to be planned into the resin pour — cutting into cured epoxy after the fact is possible but looks worse than pre-planned openings, especially near the resin line.
Practical rule for planning: decide before you order how many power units you want (typically one per two seats), and specify their positions in inches from the long-axis center. Commercial catalogs use "tech nodes" that vary in size with table length; the same logic applies to a custom build. [^nucraft-tech]
5) Epoxy conference tables — what the market actually offers
Custom epoxy river conference tables sit at a real 2026 price band that buyers should know about before comparing quotes:

The live band for a real 10–12 seat custom epoxy conference table in walnut with a river or straight resin design is roughly $5,500 to $12,500 as of 2026, with the top of that range reflecting waterfall legs, larger sizes, or more elaborate resin work. Anything wildly below $5k for a 130"+ walnut top is either a shipping quote error or a dramatically smaller table than advertised.
Compare that to commercial-office-furniture equivalents: Steelcase's Convene, Herman Miller's Headway, and Nucraft's Tavola / Flow / Alev lines cover the same sizes but with veneer or laminate tops, not solid hardwood and resin — different product entirely. 6) BIFMA and ergonomics: context, not certification
The relevant furniture standard for conference tables is ANSI/BIFMA X5.5-2021 Desk and Table Products, which covers dimensional and structural criteria for traditional desks and tables. Two important honesty notes:
- BIFMA X5.5 is a product standard for testing; individual custom pieces are not "BIFMA certified" the way a chair line is. If a custom-table maker tells you their piece is "BIFMA certified," ask which specific test protocol was run on which specific SKU, and by whom. In most cases the answer is "it was designed to BIFMA dimensions" — which is a reasonable statement, but not the same thing as certification.
- Ergonomic guidelines assume standard office chairs and reach envelopes. A conference table for 6-foot-plus executives with wide shoulders may want the 36" width option even if 42" reads as spacious; conversely, a small huddle room can get away with 36" width for four people.
Use BIFMA as dimensional context — it validates why 28.5–29" heights and 30–42" per-seat spacing show up everywhere — not as a marketing badge.
7) A quick decision framework
If you're specifying a conference table right now, work these five decisions in order:
- Working seat count — the real number.
- Table length — seats × 36" spacing + 24" total end clearance, round up to the nearest 12" for standard sizing.
- Table width — 42" for tight rooms, 48" standard, 60" for presentation-heavy rooms.
- Shape — rectangle for maximum seats, boat/racetrack for presentations, oval/round for small teams.
- Room clearance — table length + 72" minimum along the long axis; table width + 72" minimum along the short axis.
If any of those five numbers doesn't fit your room, revisit shape before you revisit seat count. A 10-seat boat table often fits a room where a 10-seat rectangle doesn't.
