The 7 Best Wood Species for Epoxy Tables (And How to Actually Pick One)

You already know you want a wood + epoxy table. The problem is that every maker's website shows you the same seven or eight species and gives you almost no help choosing between them. This guide fixes that.

Below is a decision framework — not a ranking — built on published mechanical data from the USDA Forest Products Laboratory Wood Handbook (FPL-GTR-282, 2021) [^fpl-gtr282] and cross-checked against The Wood Database's per-species pages. It's designed so that after reading it, you can walk into any custom quote conversation and say, "I want walnut for the color and I know I need to accept a Janka around 1,010 lbf — protect it accordingly."

That last part matters. Most best-wood-for-epoxy articles quote Janka hardness as if it were a scratch-proof number. It isn't. Janka is a comparative dent-resistance metric. It's useful for ordering species against each other; it's not a promise that your table won't scratch. We keep it in perspective throughout.

Read that whole table once and don't try to memorize it. The rest of this article turns those numbers into decisions.


Step 1: what are you actually optimizing for?

There are only four real reasons to pick one wood over another:

  1. A specific look (color, grain figure, contrast with the resin)
  2. A specific durability threshold (kids, dogs, dinner parties every weekend vs a formal dining room used twice a month)
  3. A specific budget (slab cost varies 3–8x across these species)
  4. A specific room (does the room want warmth, contrast, or quiet?)

If you can rank those four for yourself before you talk to a maker, you will save both of you three rounds of email.


Step 2: match the look you actually want

Black Walnut — the default for dark rivers

Chocolate-brown heartwood, sometimes with purple undertones. Straight to occasionally wavy grain. This is the wood that most river-table photography you've saved to Pinterest was made from.

Pair it with: deep midnight blue, black transparent, emerald green, gold-leaf clear, or a warm amber. Walnut hides high-contrast resin choices better than any other species on this list.

Real examples in this pairing:

  • Walnut + ocean-blue waterfall dining, 72" × 36" (~$6,000) (ThawHome)
  • Walnut + white transparent river dining, 35.4" × 71" (~$4,199) (ThawHome)

Cost tradeoff: walnut sits in the middle of this list per board foot. It's not the cheapest and not the most expensive.

Janka reality check: at 1,010 lbf, walnut is softer than oak and softer than maple. That does not mean it dents easily under normal dining use. It means: if you drop a cast-iron dutch oven onto it from counter height, walnut will bruise where maple might just chip the finish. Use a trivet.

White Oak — architectural, calm, blends with modern rooms

Light to medium brown with a subtle grain and, when quarter-sawn, the distinctive ray-fleck figure that shows up in mid-century furniture.

Pair it with: clear resin (lets the ray fleck show), amber, warm gray-blue, sage. White oak is the wood most likely to disappear into a Japandi or minimalist room instead of dominating it.

Cost tradeoff: white oak slab prices we found in July 2026 ranged from ~$8 to ~$17.85 per board foot across six sourced listings, which puts it in a similar band to walnut, with 8/4 rough-sawn on the lower end.

Watch out for: white oak has open pores and high tannin content. Any competent maker will do a solvent wipe and a thin seal coat before the flood pour, because tannins can migrate into the resin and cloud it. If a maker skips this step, the epoxy near the edge will look milky by year two.

Reference: The USDA-cited FPL data on White Oak lists Janka around 1,350 lbf and density around 755 kg/m³. [^fpl-mech]

Red Oak — a real budget option, with real tradeoffs

Similar color palette to white oak but with a coarser, more open grain pattern. In slab form, red oak is one of the cheapest domestic hardwoods on this list — our July 2026 dataset put it at ~$4.90 to ~$6.49 per board foot, roughly half the price of white oak in the same dimensions.

Where it shines: indoor dining tables where the customer wants an "oak look" but doesn't need the outdoor-hardy properties white oak brings. Also useful when the budget is tight and the epoxy river is going to be the visual centerpiece anyway.

Where to avoid: anything that will see moisture or outdoor exposure. Red oak's open cell structure and lower natural decay resistance make it a poor choice for humid environments. [^fpl-mech]

Olive — the show-off species

Wildly figured, high-contrast, streaky brown-and-cream heartwood. Olive is what makers use when they want the wood itself to be the sculpture and the resin to just be a supporting frame.

Janka: 2,700 lbf. That's roughly 2.7× walnut and nearly 2× hard maple. In practical terms, olive dining tables genuinely resist dents from silverware in ways walnut can't match.

Cost tradeoff (the reason it's not the default): olive slab prices in July 2026 ranged from ~$19.50 to ~$37.98 per board foot — the highest of the seven, and that's before you consider that most olive slabs are small. A 90-inch olive dining slab is rare. Most olive tables in the wild are coffee tables or small dining pieces.

Pair it with: black transparent resin (dramatic), clear (lets the figure carry the entire table), or a warm bronze.

Real examples: olive + resin in Iron's Custom Wood's catalog runs from small $1,790 coffee tables (44" × 24") up to $10,040 for a 116" statement dining slab.

White Ash — the light-tone alternative to maple

Similar color range to maple (creamy pale to light golden brown) but with a stronger, more prominent grain pattern. If maple looks "too uniform" for the room you're building, ash is usually the right pivot.

Cost tradeoff: ash slab prices in July 2026 ranged ~$7 to $12 per board foot across five sourced listings — cheaper than walnut, close to red oak on the low end and white oak on the high end.

Watch out for: open grain. Like oak, ash needs a proper seal coat before the epoxy pour. On a well-built table this is invisible; on a sloppy build the pores near the epoxy line will fill with resin and create dark speckles.

Black Cherry — for warmth-first rooms

Warm reddish-brown heartwood that darkens over years of UV exposure. Softer than the others on this list at 950 lbf Janka, with a lower density (~560 kg/m³) that also makes cherry noticeably lighter per slab. [^wooddb-cherry]

Pair it with: clear resin (the wood's ambering is the story), warm honey, deep translucent black. Avoid cool blues — they fight cherry's warmth.

Cost tradeoff: cherry slab prices we found were similar to red oak on a per-board-foot basis, though large clean dining slabs are less common in cherry than in walnut.

Reality check: cherry is the softest species on this list. If your household includes small kids doing homework at the dining table, or you routinely put down laptops without a mat, walnut/oak/maple will handle it better.

Hard Maple — the pale modern choice with the highest Janka here

At 1,450 lbf Janka, hard maple is the hardest domestic species in the group (olive is harder but rarely available in dining sizes). Pale cream color, minimal figure, very uniform grain.

Cost tradeoff: maple slab prices in July 2026 ranged ~$6.88 to $9 per board foot — one of the more affordable options on this list.

Pair it with: dark translucent black river (maximum contrast), matte deep blue, or clear (Scandi look).

Watch out for: the visual quiet is either a feature or a bug. Maple without a bold resin choice can feel plain in a large room.


Step 3: Janka is a hardness comparison, not a scratch-proof rating

The industry keeps quoting Janka like it's a product warranty. It isn't.

Janka is defined by ASTM D2555 as the force required to embed a 11.28 mm steel ball halfway into the wood. [^astm-d2555] It's a laboratory dent test on a single small sample of wood, at a specific moisture content. It's a good relative ranking of species. It is not a promise about how your finished table will hold up to a particular fork drop or a particular type of scratch.

Real-world durability of a wood + epoxy table depends on:

  • The finish you chose (Full Gloss, Full Matte, or a wax-oil hybrid)
  • The thickness of the top-coat
  • Whether you use trivets, coasters, and placemats
  • How often you refresh the finish

So use Janka to answer "walnut vs cherry, which is harder?" (walnut, but only slightly). Do not use it to answer "is walnut scratch-proof?" (no species is, and no finish is either).


Step 4: adhesion and prep — the invisible failure point

This is the section most consumer guides skip, and it's the reason tables from cheap makers start to fail at year two while tables from disciplined makers last decades.

Two things have to be right before the resin ever touches the wood:

1. The wood must be dry enough. System Three's technical support puts the operating rule bluntly: "The general operating rule is 12% or below." [^systemthree-mc] TotalBoat's guidance is similar — under 10–12% moisture content before you apply their penetrating epoxy. [^totalboat-mc]

If a maker pours epoxy over a slab at 15% moisture content, the wood will keep drying under the epoxy, shrink slightly, and open up hairline separations at the wood-resin seam within 12–24 months. You can't fix this without a full recoat.

2. Oily or oily-adjacent species need a solvent wipe. Walnut is mildly oily. Teak, cocobolo, and rosewoods are dramatically oily — enough to interfere with epoxy adhesion — but they're not on this list because they don't belong on a first-time epoxy table anyway.

For walnut, oak, ash, cherry, and maple, a competent maker wipes the bonding surface with denatured alcohol or acetone and lets it flash off before the seal coat. It's a five-minute step that most reddit horror stories skip.


Step 5: outdoor question — a hard no by default

None of the seven species on this list are outdoor-first choices for a wood + epoxy table.

  • White oak has closed pores and better natural decay resistance than the others, but the FPL's own decay-resistance summary calls even white oak's outdoor performance "variable." [^fpl-decay]
  • Red oak, ash, walnut, cherry, and maple are all indoor-first woods. Their published decay-resistance ratings are "slightly resistant to nonresistant." [^fpl-decay-ash]
  • Olive has good natural oil content but slabs are too small to make outdoor dining tables anyway.

Step 6: the ThawHome answer

  • Black Walnut — default, largest inventory, works with every resin color we pour
  • Walnut (general) — for customers who don't need the specific black walnut heartwood look
  • Olive — for statement coffee and small dining pieces
  • Ash — for light-tone rooms
  • Beech — for cleaner pale looks, similar territory to maple
  • Golden Camphor — a warm alternative to cherry, occasionally in stock
  • Poplar — occasionally in our product feed for budget-conscious builds
  • Cunninghamia — special order for customers asking for a specific Chinese fir look

Not currently on our default menu: Oak (red or white), Cherry, or Hard Maple. If you want one of those, it's a special-request species — tell us during the design brief and we'll source the slab if we can.

We deliberately don't push a "best" species. The right species is the one that fits your room, your budget, and how often you actually use the table.

Lead time is 9–12 weeks regardless of species. Species choice does move the total quote, mostly through slab availability.


The two-question test to end the paralysis

If you still can't decide, answer these two questions:

1. What color does the room already want?

  • Warm / dark / editorial → walnut
  • Light / airy / architectural → ash, beech, or (special request) maple
  • Statement / sculptural → olive
  • Warm / vintage → cherry (special request) or golden camphor
  • Budget-tight / oak look → walnut or ash (we don't stock oak)

2. Am I willing to babysit the finish, or do I want a wood that's already forgiving?

  • Willing to wax-oil every 18 months and use coasters → walnut, cherry
  • I want the hardest thing that still looks intentional → olive or maple
  • I want it to just work → ash, beech, or standard walnut

Once you have both answers, tell us the room and the two answers and we'll come back within 48 hours with a design that fits.
